Duck Dynasty

Well you would have to be living under a rock not to have heard about the controversy surrounding the GQ interview with Phil Robertson, head of the Duck Dynasty clan.  Check out this blog post by Patrick Archbold at National Catholic Register for a little perspective.  While we are at it, what if anything, are YOU going to DO about it?  Have you talked to anyone about it?  Have you sent a note to A&E or to Cracker Barrel (also cancelled Duck Dynasty from their stores) expressing your thoughts on the matter?  Are we going to participate in the culture war or will we be silent about the teachings of the Catholic Church?

This just in...before I could post this word came out on the blogosphere that after initially pulling the Duck Dynasty merchandise from their shelves Cracker Barrel has caved in to VOCAL pressure from their customers and returned said merchandise to their shelves.  Interesting....we can have an effect if we will simply speak up!

The Joy of the Gospel

Please take a look here as Fr. Barron comments on Pope Francis and the New Evangelization.  Well worth the time as we look to the revitalization of OLM and picture the future of the Parish.

Suffering

Here is a good little video on Suffering.  Well worth a visit!  And a good explanation
why we have the crucifix so prominently displayed in our Churches.

Vatican Survey

Please follow this Link to the Atlanta Archdiocese Web Site for a short message from Archbishop Gregory and a direct link to the Vatican Survey.  Please do follow up and complete the survey! As Fr. Shuler said this morning, it is remarkable!

You are Omnipotent.....Huh?

We are all omnipotent!  Really?  How can this possibly make any sense?

Here is a thought provoking perspective by Fr. Dwight Longenecker on the impact of and meaning of God's omnipotence, our being created in God's image, free will and obedience. When you put all four of those together some interesting things begin to happen!  Read on!

A little Apologetics piece

This whole idea was new to me as far as a"re-designed crucifix" is concerned.  None the less, have a look and comment should you so desire.

Happy Thanksgiving!

As we gather around our Thanksgiving tables together to celebrate we would do well to read and contemplate the following words from George Washington as he proclaimed the first official Thanksgiving for our newly founded country:

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"
Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d day of October, A.D. 1789."

A VERY timely massage for us to ponder as our secular society moves to relegate religion to something that the government, in its most beneficent state, allows us to do within the confines of the 4 walls of a church building rather than practice as a way of life.

Simcha Fisher on NFP!

Please check out this book review and interview with one of our favorite catholic bloggers, Simcha Fisher!  I would describe her as a modern day Catholic Erma Bombeck!  She has self published a book on NFP, available via Amazon.com entitled The Sinner's Guide to Natural Family Planning.  I  have read it, and though I do not need it for myself at this point in life, I know that we will share it with our own kids for sure!  It is truly worth the price and the read.

Spiritual Gifts in a Beer Commercial?

Leave it to Msgr. Pope to find spiritual direction in a German beer commercial!  Please click here to read the blog and be sure to read to the end to see this....by the way it is also a window in to the male/female relationship and what is important to each in a good natured and funny little video clip!  Enjoy!

Ever wonder what Calvin's (Calvin and Hobbs) creator is up to?

Have a look here to find some advice for life from him.  Seems he is not a fan of the rat race.
There is a lot of wisdom in this.

Seeing the Priesthood in Wego the Bud Light Dog?

Only Msgr. Pope could come up with this one!  And yet, how true! Well worth the read and view of the commercial which I think premiered on the Super Bowl (but I could be wrong!)

Press Conference with Cardinal Dolan and Fr. Barron

And while we are on the press and how things can be distorted please take a look here for a video of Cardinal Dolan's recent press conference with Fr. Barron at St. Patrick's on September 22, 2013.  It has a wide range of subjects focused on the 6 month anniversary of the Papacy of Francis.

Cartoon

This Cartoon by Jason Bach is well worth a visit.  It is a humorous look at what might happen if the Pope called in an order for pizza and asked to hold the anchovies!

Back at it!

We are now entering a new educational year for the Parish, so I will be back to posting various pieces that I think might be of interest to our group.  Please do give some feedback, and if you find something that you would like to share with us please forward it to me by email so that I can pass it on via the blog.

The "New Atheism" in young adults....a different take on it!

Here is an interesting blog by Larry Taunton that appeared in The Atlantic.  As we move to improve our "youth group" and religious education in general, there are several points here that we need to keep firmly in mind.  This is definitely worth a read, especially for those who teach.

New Book Blog in the works

Barbara and I are working on getting the old Book Blog set up for a summer reading group to go through Bad Religion...How We Became a Nation of Heretics by Ross Douthat.  It should be fun and we are going to try to engage the DTS to see if we can get a good Ecumenical group reading this all at once.  The plan is to go chapter by chapter and to have a group dinner meeting at the end of each of the 3 sections of the book to meet and talk in person about it.  Hopefully we will have some spirited comments on a weekly basis.  These will be started by someone in or group who will kick off the discussion for each chapter with a short narrative to spark some comments.  The web site address for this book blog is:  http://olmbr.blogspot.com    Please go to check it out.

Volunteer bloggers are NEEDED, so please respond by email and let us know whether or not you can help.  Once we have a group of folks willing to contribute we will divide up the book in short portions for initial comment by the volunteer bloggers.  It is not a big deal, and if we have a good number of us then it will make it a very easy project.

Dr. Ben Carson at National Prayer Breakfast

Here is a link to the comments made recently at the National Prayer Breakfast.  PLEASE take the time to view this!  Pull up to the computer with a good cup of coffee, tea or other beverage and see what this courageous neurosurgeon has to say.  You will need to fast forward to the 34 minute mark.  This is the start of his introduction.  His comments will take about 25 minutes.  WELL WORTH YOUR TIME!
