Faith and Works

While we are at it his blog contained a link to another piece from November titled Faith or Works? A Different Approach .  Again by David Bonagura.  Again, EXCELLENT.  I do not know about you, but having recently gone around in the ring with several die hard Presbyterians (as this, like worship of statues and Mary always comes up!) the clarity that he brings to our side is wonderfully refreshing.  Read here how it is the Reformers who actually think that it is their work that will get them to heaven!  Incredible!

Immaculate Conception

Here is an excellent and thought provoking blog by David G. Bonagura, Jr. on Catholics, Protestants, and Immaculate Mary that appeared in The Catholic Thing yesterday on the Holy Day of Obligation for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  In my view the second paragraph explains a lot about our tendency to simply talk in circles when it comes to the points of Christian Theology that we disagree on.  It is much like trying to put a log back together after it has been split in half in a log splitter or by an ax or wedge driven down the center blow by blow.  Please give this a good read....it should come in handy for you as you work to explain your Catholic Faith to some of our Protestant brothers and sisters.

Five Ways To Show Catholic Courage At Work

Here are some ideas by Randy Hain for your consideration as we try to make visible our Faith to those around us, even to those around us at work.  Click here to check this out.

Trust and Obey

Here are some musings by Fr. Longenecker on the meaning of Faith.  This is a reflection on this Gospel passage from September 17:

“Lord, do not trouble yourself,
for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof.
Therefore, I did not consider myself worthy to come to you;
but say the word and let my servant be healed.
For I too am a person subject to authority,
with soldiers subject to me.
And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes;
and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this he was amazed at him
and, turning, said to the crowd following him,
“I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.”
When the messengers returned to the house,
they found the slave in good health.

The Crisis of a Second Obama Term...Are You Ready?

Here is a post by George Weigel.  He is making the point that the current culture of persecution is, or should be anyway, an opportunity for Catholic Evangelization.  We need to be alert and ready to counter anti-Catholicism when and where ever we find it and to do so energetically and with great charity.  Click on this link to read his comments.

The Stages of Religious Persecution

Here is an important blog by Msgr. Pope describing the 5 stages of religious persecution.  What do you think?  How far down this road are we here in the good old US of A?  Click here to view this.  The video at the end is a tad odd to be sure but is entertaining.

The Year of Faith...one thing you can do!

Here is a great little idea for those who actually do read their email every day....join the Church in studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church during the Year of Faith as suggested by Pope Benedict.  Here is a link to an article about doing this in "bite sized" chunks by reading just a bit each day through a daily email.  Super great for the lazy who cannot find time to look at the book, are too tired to pick it up or lose it with great regularity (talking about ME here!).

A 12 Point Plan by St. Paul

Here is a great blog by Msgr. Pope using Scripture (Thessalonians, Chapter 5) to give is a model for the renewal and preservation of Parish Life.  Look at these points and ask yourself, honestly:  How do I model this in my role as a member of OLM Catholic Chruch? How do we as a community model this behavior?  What can I/we do to improve in the areas we are lacking?  We will discuss this for a time at the first session of Adult Enrichment (today) but this needs to be an ongoing event in the entire Parish.  Be sure to have a look at the 2 minute video at the end.  Given that what we are actually engaged in is Spiritual Warfare, how should our Parish look?
Please comment, and bring some verbal comments to our next session.

Fr. Z on Parish Problems

Fr Z rant on Parish problems speaks to much of what we have been experiencing in our own Parish, especially when it comes to the problem of the Liturgy.  Please give this some thoughtful consideration and make some comments.

The Chalice and the Pepsi Can

Fr. Hirsch presents a wonderful picture for all of us to keep in mind, but especially for teens!

Final Word at the Democratic National Convention

Stop for just a minute and imagine his task, going in to the Lion's Den to deliver this prayer.  What would you have said had you been in his shoes?  Make no mistake about it, we are or should be precisely in his shoes on a daily basis as we interact with our culture at home, work and at play.  We might not have as big a stage, nor quite the standing and profile as the good Cardinal but we are called upon to stand up for the truth just as he is.

So here he is, delivering a message so counter to the stated beliefs and platform of the Democratic Party!  Small wonder that the major networks did not carry it.  Here is a prime example of showing Catholic courage, delivered with charity and compassion.

This is the closing benediction at the Democratic National Convention by Timothy Archbishop Dolan on YouTube video.

Here is a link to the text shown below should you care to forward it on.  You might want to print this out and read along with him as he gives this.  Perhaps we should be praying this, along with the prayer for religious freedom given to us by the USCCB (and reprinted in today's bulletin at OLM) daily.

Full Text of Cardinal Dolan's Benediction at the DNC

"With a “firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,”  let us close this convention by praying for this land that we so cherish and love:
Let us Pray.
Almighty God, father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, revealed to us so powerfully in your Son, Jesus Christ, we thank you for showering your blessings upon this our beloved nation.  Bless all here present, and all across this great land, who work hard for the day when a greater portion of your justice, and a more ample measure of your care for the poor and suffering, may prevail in these United States.  Help us to see that a society’s greatness is found above all in the respect it shows for the weakest and neediest among us.
We beseech you, almighty God to shed your grace on this noble experiment in ordered liberty, which began with the confident assertion of inalienable rights bestowed upon us by you:  life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Thus do we praise you for the gift of life.  Grant us the courage to defend it, life, without which no other rights are secure.  We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected.  Strengthen our sick and our elders waiting to see your holy face at life’s end, that they may be accompanied by true compassion and cherished with the dignity due those who are infirm and fragile.
We praise and thank you for the gift of liberty.  May this land of the free never lack those brave enough to defend our basic freedoms.  Renew in all our people a profound respect for religious liberty:  the first, most cherished freedom bequeathed upon us at our Founding. May our liberty be in harmony with truth; freedom ordered in goodness and justice.  Help us live our freedom in faith, hope, and love.  Make us ever-grateful for those who, for over two centuries, have given their lives in freedom’s defense; we commend their noble souls to your eternal care, as even now we beg the protection of your mighty arm upon our men and women in uniform.
We praise and thank you for granting us the life and the liberty by which we can pursue happiness.  Show us anew that happiness is found only in respecting the laws of nature and of nature’s God.  Empower us with your grace so that we might resist the temptation to replace the moral law with idols of our own making, or to remake those institutions you have given us for the nurturing of life and community.  May we welcome those who yearn to breathe free and to pursue happiness in this land of freedom, adding their gifts to those whose families have lived here for centuries.
We praise and thank you for the American genius of government of the people, by the people and for the people.  Oh God of wisdom, justice, and might, we ask your guidance for those who govern us:  President Barack Obama, Vice President Joseph Biden, Congress, the Supreme Court, and all those, including Governor Mitt Romney and Congressman Paul Ryan, who seek to serve the common good by seeking public office.  Make them all worthy to serve you by serving our country.  Help them remember that the only just government is the government that serves its citizens rather than itself. With your grace, may all Americans choose wisely as we consider the future course of public policy.
And finally Lord, we beseech your benediction on all of us who depart from here this evening, and on all those, in every land, who yearn to conduct their lives in freedom and justice.  We beg you to remember, as we pledge to remember, those who are not free; those who suffer for freedom’s cause; those who are poor, out of work, needy, sick, or alone; those who are persecuted for their religious convictions, those still ravaged by war.
And most of all, God Almighty, we thank you for the great gift of our beloved country.
For we are indeed “one nation under God,” and “in God we trust.”
So dear God, bless America.  You who live and reign forever and ever.
Amen!"

LCWR

I assume you have seen in the news that there is something of an issue with women religious and that somehow that mean old Vatican is attacking them.  Or so the secular press puts it.  For those interested in delving in to this a bit (and we all should, as our non-Catholic friends are sure to ask!) here is a great little piece that does a great job summarizing the issues and provides a series of  links to prior coverage by The National Catholic Register:  Vatican Attacks Nuns!? by Dan Burke

Community.....

I saw this post on OSV and decided that it is something that our Parish Community needs to take a long hard look at as we complete the sessions of neighborhood meetings.    Here is the link to this article with comments.  Here is the article only by Russell Shaw:

Shaw: How the 'decline of community' in America affects parishes

By Russell Shaw

In recent years social critics like Robert Putnam (Bowling Alone) and Charles Murray (Coming Apart) have documented and deplored a decline of community among Americans. It’s a development that affects churches along with other institutions of civil society.

But “decline of community” is an abstraction and hardly self-explanatory. A story told by a man I know offers a concrete illustration.

“My wife and I have lived for many years in a nice, quiet neighborhood inhabited by nice, quiet people. In many ways, we’re very happy. But as time passes, I become increasingly aware that everything isn’t as it should be.

“Let me tell you about the Smiths — not their real name, of course. They lived here almost as long as we have, and they’re nice, quiet people too. A few weeks ago, my wife phoned their house hoping to chat with Mrs. Smith. Mr. Smith answered.

“'Betty is out,’ he told my wife, ‘and I can’t talk now. I’m packing.’

“‘You’re taking a trip?’

“‘We sold the house to our daughter and her husband. We’re moving.’ It turned out that they were going to a gated townhouse section several blocks away. The movers would be coming in two days.

“I was flabbergasted when my wife told me. As I mentioned, the Smiths had lived near us for many years. We weren’t particularly close friends, but our daughters had babysat their kids, and they were the only churchgoing Catholics in the vicinity besides ourselves. Yet here they were, all set to move, and they’d have gone without a word if my wife hadn’t happened to call.

“Now that, frankly, is what I call weird. Yet as I think about it, it’s also typical of life in our neighborhood. People here are strangers who happen to live near one another. In all the years we’ve been here, only one person — one! — has been truly friendly, really behaved as you might expect a neighbor to do. That was a woman who lived across the street from us, and she, I’m sorry to say, moved into a retirement home several years ago. Now it’s entirely a neighborhood of nice, quiet strangers.”

And that, I suspect, is the “decline of community” in one isolated but perhaps not atypical case.

To some extent, it may be a regional phenomenon. I suspect there are other parts of the country — perhaps even other parts of the city where the man who shared this story lives — where neighborliness and community can still be found. But if the Putnams and the Murrays are right, there are other places where they can’t.

Is that really so bad? Writing in The Weekly Standard, author Gertrude Himmelfarb maintains that it is. “Individuals are increasingly removed from the traditional networks of ‘civic engagement’ — family, friends, professional organizations, and other associations. This erosion of civil society results in a decline of ‘social capital,’ which bodes ill for democracy at home and for democratization abroad.”

And also for religion. Himmelfarb notes the problem this poses posed for “traditional denominational, neighborhood, family-centered churches.” The churches currently doing well in America, she observes, are megachurches where thousands gather to hear charismatic preachers and small, nondenominational “spiritual” churches “unstable in doctrine as in membership.”

In theory, a Catholic parish, understood as the locus of a eucharistic community, holds the key to a solution. But in practice? There are lively, vibrant parishes that are true communities. There are others that are not. We need to know a lot more than we do about what makes the difference.

USCCB Blog link from today....

Here is a quote from the text of  this post on the USCCBlog site.  Kind of puts it in perspective...again, the whole post is well worth your time.

"One final, particularly smug and ugly assumption is the cultural dismissal of the importance of the work of the Church and religion in general. "Catholic Charities won't comply with the new marriage law? Fine. Who needs 'em?" "The Church won't provide abortions and sterilizations at their hospitals? Fine. Give us the keys."

It takes a special kind of nerve to be cavalier about the societal contributions of an institution that provided food services to 7,146,490 people in 2010 alone, to say nothing of the housing-related services to 497,732 people, counseling services to 405,848 people, immigration services to 323,312 people, addiction services to 81,866 people, pregnancy services to 93,542 people and adoption services to 38,829 people. (Source: Catholic Charities USA)

Megan McArdle at The Atlantic addressed this beautifully in an article on the HHS mandate, noting, "These people seem to be living in an alternate universe that I don't have access to, where there's a positive glut of secular organizations who are just dying to provide top-notch care for the sick, the poor, and the dispossessed."

For Greater Glory

A must see movie!  I cannot think of a better time for this movie to come out!  Please click here to view the trailer!  Here is what the movie is about:

Description:A chronicle of the Cristeros War (1926-1929), which was touched off by a rebellion against the Mexican government's
attempt to secularize the country.

SOUND FAMILIAR ANYONE????

I am trying not to get too paranoid, but when I looked at this trailer my first thought was that not only is our government actively trying to remove our freedom to practice our faith, it is also working very hard to remove our rights to keep and bear arms!  A very scary prospect indeed.  This happened in Mexico, a CATHOLIC country a mere 87 years ago, in this century!

Why Women Cannot Be Catholic Priests

Please say it isn't so.....

Read 'em and weep....

Starbuck's goes Brokeback

A bit old (January this year), but seriously....

Now that you KNOW, what are you going to do about it?

8 Objections to the HHS Mandate....can you Answer them?

Objection #1: Why is there the continuing concern? President Obama has already modified the HHS Mandate to alleviate the concerns expressed by the Catholic Church.
Objection #2: The opposition of the Catholic Church to the HHS Mandate is just another example of the Church promoting discrimination against women.
Objection #3: The Catholic Church, in opposing the HHS Mandate, is attempting to impose its morality on people who disagree with its beliefs.
Objection #4: There are instances when such drugs and procedures mandated by HHS are necessary to treat health issues unrelated contraception.
Objection #5: The Catholic Church should keep out of my bedroom and not tell me what I can and cannot do.
Objection #6: The Church’s teaching against contraception doesn’t matter; after all, one survey indicates that 98% of Catholic women have used contraception within the 3 months preceding the survey.
Objection #7: The government is not infringing on your First Amendment Freedom of Worship with the HHS Mandate. Why does the Church insist that this is a constitutional issue?

Objection #8: But the government is only seeking to make necessary preventative health services available to all women. Surely this is for the common good. How is that an infringement of anyone’s rights under the Constitution?

Have a look at these, give them some thought as to how you would answer them in a conversation, then go here to see one person's reasoned replies.

United for Religious Freedom
A Statement of the Administrative Committee Of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops March 14, 2012
The Administrative Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, gathered for its March 2012 meeting, is strongly unified and intensely focused in its opposition to the various threats to religious freedom in our day. In our role as Bishops, we approach this question prayerfully and as pastors—concerned not only with the protection of the Church’s own institutions, but with the care of the souls of the individual faithful, and with the common good.
To address the broader range of religious liberty issues, we look forward to the upcoming publication of “A Statement on Religious Liberty,” a document of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. This document reflects on the history of religious liberty in our great Nation; surveys the current range of threats to this foundational principle; and states clearly the resolve of the Bishops to act strongly, in concert with our fellow citizens, in its defense.
One particular religious freedom issue demands our immediate attention: the now- finalized rule of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that would force virtually all private health plans nationwide to provide coverage of sterilization and contraception—including abortifacient drugs—subject to an exemption for “religious employers” that is arbitrarily narrow, and to an unspecified and dubious future “accommodation” for other religious organizations that are denied the exemption.
We begin, first, with thanks to all who have stood firmly with us in our vigorous opposition to this unjust and illegal mandate: to our brother bishops; to our clergy andreligious; to our Catholic faithful; to the wonderful array of Catholic groups and institutions that enliven our civil society; to our ecumenical and interfaith allies; to women and men of all religions (or none at all); to legal scholars; and to civic leaders. It is your enthusiastic unity in defense of religious freedom that has made such a dramatic and positive impact in this historic public debate. With your continued help, we will not be divided, and we will continue forward as one.
Second, we wish to clarify what this debate is—and is not—about. This is not about access to contraception, which is ubiquitous and inexpensive, even when it is not provided by the Church’s hand and with the Church’s funds. This is not about the religious freedom of Catholics only, but also of those who recognize that their cherished beliefs may be next on the block. This is not about the Bishops’ somehow “banning contraception,” when the U.S. Supreme Court took that issue off the table two generations ago. Indeed, this is not about the Church wanting to force anybody to do anything; it is instead about the federal government forcing the Church—consisting of its faithful and all but a few of its institutions—to act against Church teachings. This is not a matter of opposition to universal health care, which has been a concern of the Bishops’ Conference since 1919, virtually at its founding. This is not a fight we want or asked for, but one forced upon us by government on its own timing. Finally, this is not a Republican or Democratic, a conservative or liberal issue; it is an American issue.
So what is it about?
An unwarranted government definition of religion. The mandate includes an extremely narrow definition of what HHS deems a “religious employer” deserving exemption—employers who, among other things, must hire and serve primarily those of
their own faith. We are deeply concerned about this new definition of who we are as people of faith and what constitutes our ministry. The introduction of this unprecedented defining of faith communities and their ministries has precipitated this struggle for religious freedom. Government has no place defining religion and religious ministry. HHS thus creates and enforces a new distinction—alien both to our Catholic tradition and to federal law—between our houses of worship and our great ministries of service to our neighbors, namely, the poor, the homeless, the sick, the students in our schools and universities, and others in need, of any faith community or none. Cf. Deus Caritas Est, Nos. 20-33. We are commanded both to love and to serve the Lord; laws that protect our freedom to comply with one of these commands but not the other are nothing to celebrate. Indeed, they must be rejected, for they create a “second class” of citizenship within our religious community. And if this definition is allowed to stand, it will spread throughout federal law, weakening its healthy tradition of generous respect for religious freedom and diversity. All—not just some—of our religious institutions share equally in the very same God-given, legally-recognized right not “to be forced to act in a manner contrary to [their] own beliefs.” Dignitatis Humanae, No. 2.
A mandate to act against our teachings. The exemption is not merely a government foray into internal Church governance, where government has no legal competence or authority—disturbing though that may be. This error in theory has grave consequences in principle and practice. Those deemed by HHS not to be “religious employers” will be forced by government to violate their own teachings within their very own institutions. This is not only an injustice in itself, but it also undermines the effective proclamation of those teachings to the faithful and to the world. For decades, the Bishops
have led the fight against such government incursions on conscience, particularly in the area of health care. Far from making us waver in this longstanding commitment, the unprecedented magnitude of this latest threat has only strengthened our resolve to maintain that consistent view.
A violation of personal civil rights. The HHS mandate creates still a third class, those with no conscience protection at all: individuals who, in their daily lives, strive constantly to act in accordance with their faith and moral values. They, too, face a government mandate to aid in providing “services” contrary to those values—whether in their sponsoring of, and payment for, insurance as employers; their payment of insurance premiums as employees; or as insurers themselves—without even the semblance of an exemption. This, too, is unprecedented in federal law, which has long been generous in protecting the rights of individuals not to act against their religious beliefs or moral convictions. We have consistently supported these rights, particularly in the area of protecting the dignity of all human life, and we continue to do so.
Third, we want to indicate our next steps. We will continue our vigorous efforts at education and public advocacy on the principles of religious liberty and their application in this case (and others). We will continue to accept any invitation to dialogue with the Executive Branch to protect the religious freedom that is rightly ours. We will continue to pursue legislation to restore the same level of religious freedom we have enjoyed until just recently. And we will continue to explore our options for relief from the courts, under the U.S. Constitution and other federal laws that protect religious freedom. All of these efforts will proceed concurrently, and in a manner that is mutually reinforcing.
Most importantly of all, we call upon the Catholic faithful, and all people of faith, throughout our country to join us in prayer and penance for our leaders and for the complete protection of our First Freedom—religious liberty—which is not only protected in the laws and customs of our great nation, but rooted in the teachings of our great Tradition. Prayer is the ultimate source of our strength—for without God, we can do nothing; but with God, all things are possible.

Protestant Bible Studies?

Here is an interesting blog post on a topic that all of us face up here on Lookout Mountain. What do we DO about going to Protestant Bible Studies?  How should we look at this?  Here is one perspective on that.  I would love to see some COMMENT on this, as I know that at least some of us (meaning ME!) have been know to participate in such studies.

Cardinal Dolan's Update

Here is a link to Cardinal Dolan's blog.  The update is from March 1.

Fr. Barron on Idolatry

Please take the time during Lent to reflect with Fr. Barron on the subject of idolatry.  Well worth the time!

A new series of things for you to contemplate....

We will start with a great video that puts the Obama HHS Mandate in perspective that showed up on The Deacon's Bench.  It puts the "spin" from those for the mandate in to perspective.  Not that that has not been done time and again before, but here is a well thought out, reasoned plea "not to be conned"!

Here is Russell Shaw on the same topic.

Here is an interesting little piece on the financial fallout if the mandate results in the closure of Catholic Health Care.

And finally Elizabeth Scalia weighs in and ends with the same video we started with.

PLEASE, if you do nothing else look at the video, talk about it and forward it!

Comments from Cardinal George

Here is yet another voice on the HHS mandate and the significance of the fight that we are in with the government and the secular society.  Chilling thoughts, but on the horizon none the less.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan back in St. Patrick's Cathedral

Here is link to Cardinal Timothy Dolan giving what Deacon Kandra calls "a stemwinder" of a homily after his return from Rome.  Please have a look at it....a great reflection on temptation and good for early on in the season of Lent.  It gives a wonderful little window in to what happens when one is made a Cardinal and how this man deals with the temptations that go with it.  For those of you who do not have time to watch the whole 20 minutes I would suggest letting it load, fast forward with the slider to the 5.00 mark and let it go from there.  The first 5 minutes or so is dedicated to thanking all of those gathered at St. Patrick's, quite a large group so it takes awhile.  Enjoy!

The Scale of the Universe!

I saw this The Scale of the Universe on New Advent.  Steve Ray posted it on his blog.
Truly amazing.

Another sobering article on Conscience

Please have a look at this post by Matthew Hanley in The Catholic Thing.

"“A clear conscience is more precious than liberty or life.” So said Lithuanian factory worker Nijole Sadunaite to a KGB judge in 1970 when she refused to testify against a priest accused of teaching religion......."

This is near the end of the article.  Read it to find out the rest of what she had to say and her fate for doing so.

Class on Sunday March 11

Cancelled.

The times just keep getting more and more interesting.

Here is a new word, at least for me.
Atheocracy
We are rapidly seeing what it is like to live in one.
Have a look and see the fallout from a conversation in a Denver Sports Bar.

First Sunday of Lent

Now that we have completed the Catholicism Series we will focus on the season of Lent.

This week we will discuss our Mass readings for the first Sunday of Lent:
Genesis 9: 8-15
Mark 1: 12-15

Listen to Fr. Barron's reflections on Sunday's readings.

Duties of Lent:
Prayer
Fasting
Alms giving

How will you apply these duties in your Lenten journey?  Give this some thought and come prepared to share!

Here is the final paragraph...

"I am not a Catholic, nor do I believe in the Church’s opposition to contraception. But I pray that the leadership of the Catholic Church will have the faith and courage to stand for its core beliefs and use all of its moral power and political influence to defeat the President’s edict. I pray they will reach out across the political spectrum to people of all faiths, agnostics and atheists in the name of religious freedom and individual liberty. By so doing, they, and the institution of the Catholic Church, will have my love and respect for the rest of my life."

Please go here to Forbes Magazine and an article by Charles Kadlec for the rest of the article entitled "The Audacity of Power:  President Obama Vs. The Catholic Church. A great piece that lays it open, on the line, for those who have ears to listen.....

Sunday Feb 19

After the fact post, but we completed the Catholicism Series by Fr. Robert Barron today.  Attendance was light and I am sorry that so many of you missed the final DVD.  It was wonderful.

We will need to decide on a direction and topics for the rest of the year, so please leave a comment or send me an email with your thoughts.

Dolan in Rome on the eve of his elevation to Cardinal.....

Please have a look at this post on the eve of the elevation of Archbishop Timothy Dolan to Cardinal.  There are some news clip videos at the end.  Be sure to at least watch a couple of those! This is a truly significant event for the US Catholic Church, and for all of us as individuals.  Barbara and I had the unique opportunity to meet with him personally about 2 weeks ago, and we can say from first hand knowledge that all that is being said about him is true and on point.  We will post a little blog soon about our experience, but I had to put this up tonight as it is his last night as an Archbishop!  We are so excited and happy about this!

The History of the Church on Contraception

For those of you curious about the roots of the Bishop's stand on the issue of contraception, please take the time to read Fr. Pacwa's article in the National Catholic Register.

The Bishops Respond

As you are most likely aware, the President's "accomodation" is a non-starter.  Please go here to the USCCB web site for full details including how you can help in this important fight.  In addition to letters sent via mail I would hope that everyone is sending out emails with links to those on their contact list to spread the word about this.  Post it on Facebook!  Get creative!

Here are six things that everyone should know about the mandate, from the USCCB.

And here are six more, again from the USCCB.

And finally for this post, here is our own Archbishop Gregory on TV with CBS in Atlanta.  He is very clear on the video what the position of the Church is, and what is will remain.

Two for one.....Fr. Barron and Mark Shea on the Obama HHS Mandate

As usual we can rely on Fr. Barron for excellent commentary.  I this like we also have Mark Shea, who is a wonderful Catholic writer and his piece starts with the most video from Fr. Barron.
Please have a look.

Pewspective link and letter to the Editor

Please have a look at this link to Barbara's Pewspective blog on the HHS Mandate situation.  It is a sobering reflection for all of us to consider.

Additionally, she did get a letter published in today's  Chattanooga Times Free Press.  Here is the text of that letter:

Health mandate violates rights
Your headline (Feb. 8) poses the HHS Mandate as "Catholics clash with President." You imply by the ink given to statistics that, if enough people approve this mandate, it ought to be done.
This is a matter of free exercise of religion. Constitutional rights are not subject to popular opinion. The exercise of religious faith is necessarily corporate. Modern secularists want to make religion entirely personal. It is unconscionable that the federal government is mandating that Catholics in Catholic institutions "sin" to comply with this mandate.
The free exercise of religion already has been compromised. Institutions and individuals have been sued for refusing to provide services to same sex "marriages." Catholic adoption services have had to close shop because they declined to place children in same-sex households, and the children they served languish.
This is not an issue of women's health, a "Catholic" issue, or an issue to be decided by majority opinion. Everyone of good conscience, religious or not, Catholic or not, approving of contraception or not, should see this as an unprecedented infringement on our constitutional rights and stand visibly, constantly, vocally and persistently against it. If not, the next group attacked may very well be your own.

Here are a few links for you to check out:

See the video at the end and leave no doubt about our President's view of the role of religion in public policy.  Michelle Malkin

Then there is Charles Krauthammer

One last one from The Gregorian Institute at Benedictine College in Kansas entitled Do You Believe Us Now, America.  Very short but to the point.

Awaiting official word from our good Bishops as they work to respond.

Sunday morning Feb 11

As we can now clearly see, the Obama Administration has no further cultural objective than to divide the Catholic Church and to capitalize politically on such a split for his own re-election.  Read this for the latest information this morning.  At war there will always be defectors, and we need to let them know that we stand behind our Bishops in this fight!

Some other comments about the revised mandate

Here is a piece by Fr. Barron in the National Catholic Register.

Here is Archbishop Chaput in The Catholic News Agency.

Jimmy Akin in the National Catholic Register

And finally George Weigel in The National Review

And for fun, 10 Pictures In Defense of the Church

The Saga Continues....Bishops still do not see Eye to Eye with Obama

Here is a Link to the soon to be released letter from the Bishops on the mandate issue.  As expected by many, this does not properly address the issues of concern relative to religious freedom and the Constitution of the United States.

Fr. Barron comments on Evangelization

We were in NYC last weekend and had the wonderful pleasure of meeting with and photographing Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, and I can say from first hand knowledge of the man that Fr. Barron is spot on in this video, not only about Dolan but about how we are to move forward in faith with spreading the Gospel to an unbelieving and often uncaring world.  As we listened to him preach and celebrate the Mass his joy was indeed infectious!

Here is the link to Fr. Barron on Effective Evangelization.

Sunday, Feb 12

We will go ahead with class this coming Sunday.  We will either finish up the Catholicism Series by Fr. Barron or we will spend some time discussing the current crisis of freedom that we are facing in this country.  Either way it should be interesting!

A small collection of links on the HHS Mandate

Here we have a small grouping of links to videos about the current crisis.

First we shall see Nancy Pelosi struggle in vain to avoid answering a really good question.

And here we have none other than Fr. Z asking the question that most of us have been keeping to ourselves or asking only of our most intimate of friends.  See the video and her own statement of direct support of Obama and his mandate.  Learn about Canon Law 915!

Need a really good overview of just what is involved in our struggle with Obama and the HHS Mandate?  Have a look at The Vortex.  This is why every thinking citizen in this country should be outraged at this, unless of course that citizen is a Socialist and wants to live under a secular dictatorship.

Here is a link to a blog with a video clip from, of all places, MSNBC in which Eric Metaxis compares what is happening in the US now to the early developments in Nazi Germany in the 1930's.  Watch and be afraid.  It is happening here and now.

Here is an interesting secular business article (no video) on how the Catholic Church just might be right about birth control.

A short video on the power of using the right words.

Please have a look at this short clip.  I hope that you find it as moving as I did.

Sunday Feb 5

Thanks to John Nash for substituting leadership of the Adult Enrichment this past week and for this coming weekend.  The topic will be lesson 9:  The Fire of His Love-Prayer and the Life of the Spirit.  This should be a great look in to that most difficult and personal topic, prayer.  Come and learn from Fr. Barron as he explores what prayer is, how it relates to Catholicism, and the different types of prayer...there are 4 of them!  Be thinking of how your own prayer life is evolving.

Another blog post on the Obama HHS Mandate

This link from a blog post of an open letter to President Obama by Mark Barnes, student and citizen, is tremendous and frankly "in your face".  Here are the last two paragraphs, but if you like go to the link and read the whole thing.  But at least read this please:

Mr. President, The Catholic Church will never obey this mandate, not if all the powers of Hell were to shove it down our throats. I know that moral doctrine may seem a strange and ancient thing to your administration, but understand that as Catholics, we are required to disobey unjust law. Commanded. It is our duty. Do you understand the gravity of the ultimatum you’ve made? You have placed the faithful Catholic in a position in which he must choose between obeying your mandate and obeying God. To comply with the HHS mandate will be considered a sin. Regardless of how you view your actions, do not so easily ignore how the Church views your actions — as attacking her flock. Force the mandate on faithful institutions, and faithful institutions will shut down their services. Force it on our hospitals, our universities, our schools, and our convents and we will bear the consequences of looking you, Sibelius and all the rest in the eyes and saying “No.” As it turns out, the Church doesn’t give a damn what you think — She never has cared for the powers of the world — and will resist you with all Her might. To be briefer still, and to say what those bound by politics cannot: Bring it.

Archbishop Timothy Dolan noted that ‎”The Amish do not carry health insurance. The government respects their principles. Christian Scientists want to heal by prayer alone, and the new health-care reform law respects that. Quakers and others object to killing even in wartime, and the government respects that principle for conscientious objectors. By its decision, the Obama administration has failed to show the same respect for the consciences of Catholics and others who object to treating pregnancy as a disease.” This injustice is not something that need solely concern the Catholic Church — if the federal government can force Catholics to act against their consciences, they can force anyone to act against their conscience, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Atheist, and by the same pitiful reasoning.
Mr. President, take it back.
Yours Truly,
Marc Barnes, student and citizen.

Archbishop Gregory's Pastoral Letter Regarding the HHS Mandate

Letter from Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory

To Be Read at all Masses in Parishes in the Archdiocese of Atlanta During the Weekend of January 28 – 29, 2012

My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I am writing to you on a matter of grave moral concern -- freedom of religion and freedom of conscience. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those “services” in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.

In so ruling, the Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation’s first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled either to violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Administration’s sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.

I stand in unity with Catholic bishops throughout the United States and other religious leaders vowing to fight this mandate.

Along with my brother bishops and other religious leaders, I insist that this is a direct attack on our religious freedom and our First Amendment rights. I will work with the bishops, other religious leaders and our fellow Americans to remove this unjust regulation.

If the administration will not rescind this violation of our First Amendment rights, we must call on our elected leaders to do so. I ask you to pray that wisdom and justice may prevail, and work together to restore our religious liberty.

Please join me in continuing to follow the development of this important issue and contacting our elected representatives to seek a just resolution.

Through our Georgia Bulletin, archdiocesan and Georgia Catholic Conference websites and other media, I will keep you up to date on the progress of this important issue.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Wilton D. Gregory Archbishop of Atlanta
